ROTAX PRESS RELEASES

BRP receives EASA TC for the Rotax 915 iSc3 A aircraft engine.

Gunskirchen, Austria
BRP receives the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Type Certificate (TC) for its new Rotax 915 iSc3 A aircraft engine.
“The EASA Type Certificate (TC) allows BRP-Rotax to now produce the certified 915 iSc3 A engine for the European market thus allowing us to fulfill the request of our customers for a more powerful Rotax aircraft engine with proven reliability,” said Thomas Uhr, general manager BRP-Rotax, vice president Powertrain BRP and R&D / Operations Lynx.
“Not only has the certification been achieved within the promised time schedule but the engine has been certified to even higher power than originally announced. Instead of 100kW (136hp) we will offer 104kW (141hp) maximum power and 99kW (135hp) maximum continuous power. Once again providing the ultimate flight experience to pilots.”

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) promotes the highest standards of safety and environmental protection in civil aviation in Europe and worldwide. After the EASA Type Certification, BRP’s Rotax aircraft engines team will concentrate on getting the American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification. Other countries will follow as each has its own validation process.

The increased power of 104kW is available up to at least 15,000 ft (4,572m) making the Rotax 915 iSc3 A engine the perfect package for all fixed wings, gyrocopter and further applications; it will also offer the possibility to carry up to 4 persons already in single engine application.

Based on the proven concept of the Rotax 912 / 914 engine series, Rotax is again offering the best power to weight ratio of its class combined with the best economy while allowing for a high flexibility on the usable fuels. It delivers the most advanced aircraft engine technology resulting in low operating cost and ease of use.

Up to this date already 12 OEMs (amongst them Tecnam, BRM Aero, NIKI Rotor Aviation, BlackWing, Zlin Aviation) have integrated the engine and will make their aircraft available very soon. Additional 47 OEMs are also already in the final stages of the integration of this engine. With more than 180,000 engines sold in over 40 years, Rotax aircraft engines lead the light sport and ultra-light aircraft market. With 19 authorized distributors and a network of more than 220 points of sale and repair centers supporting customers worldwide, Rotax aircraft engines are supplied to more than 80% of all aircraft manufacturers in its segment.

Rotax iS with single lever control on display at SnF 2017.

RS Aerotech today arrived and tied down their newly fitted SeaRey with a Rotax iS and MT constant speed propeller.  This unique test aircraft was the brainchild of Michael Stock of Stock Flight Systems.  The aircraft has been fitted with a full FADAC system for complete single lever control that reads and interprets via the CAN Aero system control information for the propeller pitch.

While the show opens tomorrow the aircraft has already created some interest with the many people setting up at the event.  In addition there will be onboard telemetry that can be read from the ground, a first as far as small experimental aircraft of this size that we know of.  Watch for a more complete report on this special aircraft later this week.

To view the aircraft, go to the Rotax iService and Training Centres booth, SE15 (near the main gate) at SNF 2017.

Release of two new IPC

While the release of an updated Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC) is not uncommon, you will see a few major changes, in these and future IPC’s.

The first change is now all IPC’s (in fact all future Rotax manuals and bulletins) will only be released in the English language.

The second and arguably more debated change is the removal of all Loctite specifications and Torque settings. Do not worry though, these will return with the new release of the new Heavy Maintenance Manual shortly.  By having all these specifications in one manual, it will be easier to keep information current.

LAG Ultralight offers training in Latin America.

It was good to get a chance to sit down and talk to Luis Gallo, the owner of LAG Ultralight.  LAG Ultralight is located in Medellin, Colombia.  They the approved Rotax independent Service Centre for Latin America and are authorized to provide RFSC iRMT training programs.
Q: How long has your company been invited involved with Rotax Aircraft engines?

A: Since October 1991.

Q: What made you want to get involved with aircraft and aircraft engines?

A: “For me, it started as a passion for flying. After 5 years of pursuing flying as a hobby, I noticed that there was a large lack of support for the flying community in our region.  In 1991 I came to Sun-n-Fun for the first time.  I met Mr. Eric Tucker and started asking some technical questions. One thing led to another and I set up the first Rotax training class in October 1991.  This led to us becoming a repair centre at first and then later the Service Centre for Colombia.  In 1998, our region was expanded to include all of Latin America.”

Q: What are some of the major changes you have seen in this region over all these years?

A: In the middle of the 90’s there was a shift away from the 2 stroke ultralights like Quicksilver, Flightstar, Max air Drifter and Condor, to 4 stroke powered aircraft like the Kit for, Searay, Flight Design and Zenair.  The longer TBO and greater fuel efficiency of the four stroke, meant less parts sales but a lot of happy customers.   This changed paved the way for new 2 seated aircraft and in turn that made it a little more family friendly sport.

Q: How has servicing an aircraft changed in this time frame?

A: The change from 2 stroke to Four stroke meant servicing became a little more technical as the engines became more sophisticated.

Q: How have you handled the change?

A: We have to expand in service, inventory, and enlarged our facility. We also increased the amount of courses we were offering in a year.  We also started expanding our repair centre network to other countries and offered the new independent Rotax Maintenance Technician training.

Q: What are some of the adversities you face operating a business in Latin America?

A: Rules between countries regarding general aviation and light sport are not similar – there is not one set standard.  So what is allowed in one country may not be allowed in another. Thanks so confusion leads to a lack of growth in our light sport segment.

Q: How are you helping with this?

A: We are spending time training independent technicians from Mexico all the way to Peru. Sharing knowledge with the authorities of the different countries to make the flying of LSA activity more safety an under same rules in the near future.
